When hiring for a role, you need to have a clear vision what objectives need to be achieved by the prospective hire and when, and what kind of attitude and skill set are needed to do that. You need to communicate this to your interviewers (better yet, you should have interviews who are good enough to be able to contribute to figuring this out), and to the people you are interviewing. Setting people for failure is a huge pitfall. Hiring for the wrong things is another. There are no universal skills and qualifications, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve and how soon. Everyone will be hurt by a poor decision, and everyone will gain from being on the same page.
